Barrow MP hits out over trident boast

BARROW MP John Woodcock has criticised his Lake District counterpart for claiming to have “kicked Trident into the long grass”.Mr Woodcock responded: “Families uncertain of their future will be dismayed to hear a local MP boasting that he and his fellow MPs ‘fought like tigers’ to put thousands of jobs in South Cumbria at risk.

Mod tanker offer from Italy rejected

A leaked letter has revealed Italian firm Fincantieri told Defence Secretary Philip Hammond that it would construct a vessel from scratch in a UK shipyard Ministers snubbed a defence company’s pledge to build one of the Royal Navy’s new £125million tankers in Britain – instead handing the work to South Korea.

MARS tankers

A new generation of 37,000-tonne tankers is to be ordered for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) to support future Royal Navy operations around the globe.The new Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) tankers will maintain the Royal Navy's ability to refuel at sea and will provide fuel to warships and task groups. They will support deployed amphibious, land and air forces close to the shore, will be able to operate helicopters, and are planned to enter service from 2016, replacing existing Royal Fleet Auxiliary single-hulled tankers.
